SpeechEasy® Introduction
SpeechEasy® - Anti-Stuttering
Device
Available in Canada
Exclusively at Island Hearing and Affiliates

A medical device that helps people who stutter conquer their affliction is available in Canada.
The SpeechEasy® device resembles a hearing aid and
inhibits stuttering by providing altered auditory feedback.
Through the use of Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) and
Frequency Altered Feedback (FAF), SpeechEasy® effectively
creates the illusion of speaking in unison with someone.
While true ‘choral speech’ improves fluency
in almost 90% of people who stutter, early field studies
show that 80% to 90% of people who stutter improve their
fluency by between 50% and 95% while wearing SpeechEasy®.
Stuttering is a communication disorder in which the flow
of speech is broken by repetitions (li-li-like this), prolongations
(lllllike this), or abnormal stoppages (no sound) of sounds
and syllables. There may also be unusual facial and body
movements associated with the effort to speak.
Facts About Stuttering:
-
300,000 people in
Canada stutter (approximately 1% of the population).
-
Typically, the ratio of male to female stutters
is about four to one.
-
More than 50
percent of people who stutter have a family member with
the condition.
-
Some 25 per cent of
all children go through a stage of development during
which they stutter.
-
Some four per cent
may stutter for six months or more.
-
Stuttering becomes an increasingly formidable
problem in the teen years as dating and social interaction
begins.
SpeechEasy® is not a cure for stuttering, but rather
a technically-sophisticated prosthetic device that is effective
while it is being used – like hearing aids or glasses.
It can be worn in or behind the ear.
Available in Canada for over five years, and licensed by Health Canada as a Class 2 medical device, SpeechEasy® is successfully being used by over 300 Canadians Who Stutter. Clinics are now available across Canada to provide the professional Speech Pathology and Hearing Health Care services needed to ensure the best possible treatment for People Who Stutter interested in SpeechEasy®.
