the last year and a half I have been apologizing to my wife for
not getting hearing aids sooner”
“No
longer does she have to keep repeating what she has just said.
I could always hear sounds in general moderately well, but my hearing
loss in the upper part of the sound spectrum made it difficult to
hear consonants clearly so that one either couldn’t make out what
was said, or misinterpreted the sound pattern with possibly disastrous
results.
I
am thoroughly satisfied with my present hearing aids, having given
up on the earlier model that I tried. They may be the monetary
equivalent to two IBM Pentium computers, but I think they are worth
every penny.
Again
and again I find that other people have tried hearing aids but
given
up on them because they are the difficult older models. The other
day, for example, we were at a luncheon in Victoria and Penny
was talking to three other wives, each of whom said that their
husbands more often than not, did not use their hearing aids because
the
results were so unsatisfactory. A wealthy Victoria friend of my
brother-in-law had given up going to gatherings of any sort because
of his hearing difficulty. John told him about my favorable experience
with Program 2 on my hearing aids which dampens down extraneous
sounds from the sides and back, & his friend thought that it
sounded like just what he needed – then he heard the price and
said,
“ I wouldn’t pay that much for a hearing aid; it would be ridiculous!”
Idiot! The automatic volume control alone would make my hearing
aids worth the price!
