Job Description - Dispensing Audiologist


Position:                   Full Time, Non-Supervisory
Location:                  All locations in Canada
Hours of Work:       Seven (7) hours daily, Monday to Friday inclusive, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
(one hour unpaid for lunch)
Supervisor:              Reports to the Area Manager
Work Conditions:   Office environ. Minimal lifting required (30lbs or less on an infrequent basis).  One to three co-workers and/or support staff. Paid bi-weekly.

Role: The Dispensing Audiologist role is to provide quality hearing health care services to Island Hearing Services clients.

Responsibilities: The Dispensing Audiologist responsibilities are to support the Island Hearing Services mission, vision and purpose statements.

Consulting:

Be able to perform the following in an efficient and professional manner:

  • Conduct hearing tests as described in the training outline for new audiologists
  • Select and order appropriate hearing aids based on audiometric test results.  This would include knowing gain requirements and when to fit the following styles of hearing aids:
  • Binaural vs Monaural
  • Bone Conduction Aids (BAHA)
  • Cros/Bicros Aids
  • Digital aids vs. Programmable vs. Analog
  • Full knowledge and use of “Customer Focused Relationship Selling Techniques”.
  • Able to present hearing aid technologies in a clear and easily understood manner.
  • Able to administer pre and post hearing aid fitting assessment questionnaires such as APHAB/COSI.
  • Perform Real Ear Measurements using appropriate real ear equipment.  This includes running, REUR, REIR, and REAR curves as well as testing for aided uncomfortable loudness levels.
  • Familiar with NAL-R, NAL-NL1 and DSL i/o fitting protocols.
  • Sound field evaluation of a hearing aid fitting to a calculated target.
  • Be able to produce ANSI print-outs using appropriate test equipment.  From the results of these readouts be able to determine if a hearing instrument is performing in or not in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.
  • Be able to select and provide appropriate loaner hearing instruments.
  • Clean hearing instruments and perform minor repairs on hearing instruments which would include replacing:
    • tubings
    • battery doors
    • ear hooks
    • control covers
    • dampers
  • Physical and acoustic modifications of hearing instruments which would include:
  • enlarging or reducing vents
  • adjusting trimmers
  • grinding shells to improve fit and comfort
  • patching small holes
  • building up shells or earmolds
  • Perform otoscopic examinations and be able to identify pathologies that require medical referral.
  • Make in-house swimplugs using silicone impression material.
  • Demonstrate and sell assistive listening devices.
  • Counsel client’s regarding hearing protection and fitting of hearing protection.
  • Provide client counselling on fitting and wearing hearing instruments.
  • Provide housecalls as mutually agreed upon with office manager.
  • Provide authorization for supplying services to VAC, WCB or any other third party payees.
  • Perform special middle ear, cochlear, retrocochlear, and Tinnitus evaluation testing when required or requested.
  • Perform pediatric testing, in offices set up for pediatric testing.
  • Able to fit, evaluate and troubleshoot all hearing aids from preferred suppliers.
  • Take deep ear impressions using all types of impression materials.

Sales:

  • To achieve hearing aid sales per operating day as defined by the Branch/Area Manager and Regional Director.
  • Aware of all preferred suppliers.
  • Able to use price book to quote costs. 
  • Very familiar with all FCH/NIHB, VAC, and WCB contract prices, policies and procedures
  • Also familiar with procedures of other 3rd party payee, i.e.: CFB, Lion’s and RCMP
  • Knows and implements all policies regarding 90 day trial, returns, repairs, warranty coverages and loss and repair warranty plans

           
Correspondence:
Responsible for professional correspondence with:

  • Clients, physicians and other health care professionals both verbally and in writing.  This would include preparing doctor letters, giving quotes and dealing with questions or complaints.
  • Third party payees like VAC, FCH/NIHB, MSSH, WCB, CFB and others.

Staff and other consultants within office in regard to your clients and office procedures

Meetings:

  • Be prepared for all requested meetings with appropriate written documentation presented in a professional format

-  Report for meetings with the Branch Manager when requested
                       

Record-Keeping:

  • Complete in a timely fashion all client file and data entry of hearing loss into Equicare and progress notes.
  • Responsible for correct pricing quotes.
  • Able to complete all manufacturer order forms and knowledgeable fo hearing aid order process in Great Plains.
  • Know all IHS Appointment, Return For Credit and Referral Codes.
  • Provide commission and expense statements to manager where applicable.
  • Knowledgeable of MEOL, Equicare and Outlook.

Miscellaneous:

Familiar with clerical office processes performed by support staff

  • Filing of current and non-current clients
  • Miscellaneous duties as required.

Education:  

  • Up-to-date on new hearing instrument technologies

Responsible for completing 15 hours of continuing education each year

  • Possess a Masters Degree in Audiology or AuD or PhD

Maintain all yearly qualifications as required by the provinical regulatory body and as dictated by any third party requirements

EDUCATION:                    

1)         Up-to-date on new hearing instrument technologies
2)         Responsible for completing 10 hours of continuing education each year
3)         Completion of the Grant MacEwan College course in hearing instrument sciences or equivalent
4)         Maintain all yearly qualifications as required by the Board of Hearing Aid Dealers and Consultants of British Columbia

QUALITIES:                         

Must be a motivated team player with strong public relation skills, and a demonstrated proficiency in the testing of hearing and the fitting of hearing instruments.  Must get along well with the public and conduct self in a professional and courteous manner.  Is honest, hard working, and exhibits effective client counselling and selling skills.
