Hearing Aids - Bone Anchored Hearing Aids

Attaching a bone anchored hearing aid BAHA (bone anchored hearing aids) is a first-line treatment option for conductive hearing loss due to chronic suppurative otitis media or bilateral atresia.  Since 1977, BAHA has offered an alternative solution for certain groups of patients and today, more than 7,000 patients have been treated with BAHA.  The Bone Anchored Hearing Aid system provides direct sound transmission through the bone and works without pressure on the skin, avoiding the drawbacks of the conventional bone conduction device.

Patients BAHA can help…

  • Chronically draining ear which does not allow the use of a standard air conductions hearing aid (external otitis, draining mastoid cavity)
  • Congenital or other acquired malformation of the middle/external ear or microtia
  • Those with bilateral conductive loss due to ossicular disease who are not appropriate for surgical correction and are unable to be aided by a conventional air conduction device.
  • Any patient dissatisfied with a conventional bone conduction device.

The surgery is normally carried out in two stages and can be done under either local or general anaesthetic.  Both operations are minor and take approximately one hour.

Island Hearing is British Columbia’s exclusive distributor for Bone Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHA).  Working with ENT surgeons and their patients, we help to ensure successful post-operative fitting and performance of bone anchored hearing instruments.
